ACTIVITY INFORMATION

Should I train my dog?

Behaviour training classes will help you understand canine behaviour and will teach you how to train your dog to be a well-behaved companion. The focus at the introductory – or Foundation – level is to teach practical skills such as walking nicely on lead without pulling; to relax and settle (i.e. on a mat), to sit and lie down when asked; to greet people politely; to come when called; to wait patiently for dinner; and to socialise appropriately with dogs and people.

The club offers a further three levels after the introductory Foundation level to challenge you and your dog and to enable you to transition to the club’s various dog sports. You will be assessed at each level to determine if you and your dog are ready to progress to the next level.

Is my dog suitable?

Dogs of any breed or mix of breeds may attend behaviour training classes from three months of age providing they are fully immunised. Older dogs of any age are also most welcome. Age-appropriate classes are provided for puppies and older dogs alike. When you join the club you will need to provide proof of vaccination – for the sake of all dogs at the club.

When are classes held?

Behaviour training classes are aligned with the ACT Government’s school terms. New training courses start in February, April, July and October each year.

Our behaviour training classes are held on Sunday mornings, Wednesday mornings and Thursday nights. You will need to choose which day you wish to attend class when you enrol.

The club’s dog sports accept members at various times of the year. Please contact the club office for more information.

How do I get involved?

To attend classes, you will need to become a member of the club. As class numbers are limited prospective new members are encouraged to join the club several weeks before the start of each new term to guarantee a place in class.

No enrolments will be taken for the term once the course has begun, however a place may be offered in a behaviour training class to commence in the next term. Dates for the next course can be found in our Calendar.
